Listen to David:
“I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.” Psalms 119:19
He was smart enough to know that even if he could chart his own course in life, he had to stick to God’s plan because his being on the earth was God’s idea:
“Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.” Psalms 119:73
So his understanding of life and what he was to do on the earth had to come from God who made him. He had options, he could have remained a shepherd boy, but God called him to be king:
“He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.” Psalms 78:70-71
Success to him would not have been in carpentry but in being the King that God had destined him to be.
Hear what the Bible says about us: Ephesians 2:10
Success to you is doing what God destined you to do!
