“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”
Acts 20:32
He said the word of God’s grace is able to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified. You’re already an heir, so the word isn’t trying to force you to be something new, instead he makes available to you what is already yours.
The word “give” is from the Greek “didomi” which means to “supply”, “drop on someone” entirely different from “lambano” which means to “take and make yours”; what this means is there are things that are already yours in Christ but you might not enjoy and experience until you fellowship with God’s word, then all of a sudden you realize the fear is gone, because fear is not your inheritance:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear…” 2 Timothy 1:7
The sorrows of sickness are gone, because he bore them on the cross for you and the word is medicine to your flesh:
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows.” Isaiah 53:4, see also 1 Peter 2:24, Proverbs 4:22
All of this happens because you commune with the word of his grace- not the word of your efforts; you couldn’t have deserved all the goodness the word brings to you, it is all by his grace.
