What an awesome privilege we have to be constantly blessed by the word of God! Sunday service left us inspired to live our lives confidently knowing who we follow.

Pastor taught from John 8:12,

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”

Jesus implied that by following him, we will never find ourselves in a position of confusion, rather, we would have the light of life, that is; an understanding of how to live life. He made this statement after an encounter he had with the Pharisees, they had brought a woman caught in adultery seeking his counsel on what to do, whether to stone her to death according to the law of Moses or to disregard the law of Moses and let her live. Jesus knowing fully well that they were seeking an occasion to trap him responded by saying that anyone of them without sin should cast the first stone, with this response, he triumphed in what should have been an impossible situation and he went on to let us know that if we would follow him, we would have the same experience in life.

There is a way to live life and if we follow Jesus, we will know how, the world gives flawed methods but God’s methods are never flawed and he wants us to rely on his methods. He says to have the light of life, we have to follow him, he lived a spiritual life and walked in the supernatural, therefore to understand how to live life, we must follow the spiritual because understanding life only begins from understanding the spiritual.

Pastor described several instances in which Jesus understood and approached life from a spiritual perspective. In Luke 4:33-36, a man with a demonic spirit interrupted him while he was teaching in the synagogue, everything described showed that he could have been an ordinary person protesting against Jesus as happened in many other instances but Jesus had spiritual insight to recognise that there was a devil involved and immediately rebuked the demonic spirit.

We also saw how Jesus’ understanding of the spiritual was demonstrated in Mark 4:34-41, in the midst of the storm, the experience of Peter, James and John as men of the sea; fishermen, failed them but Jesus having an understanding of the spiritual knew what to do, he rebuked the winds and the sea instantly became calm.

Pastor reminded us that when we got born again, we recieved the gift of eternal life and of the Holy Spirit with all of his abilities. She made us understand that for the Christian, being good at something is no longer a matter of natural giftings but of choice because we have been gifted with all of God’s abilities, she enlightened us that with this understanding, walking in the supernatural becomes easy. She made reference to the apostles of Jesus who performed the same miracles he did when they walked with him without making any extra efforts beyond believing in Jesus, letting us know that there is nothing extra we need beyond making a decision to begin to walk in the supernatural, all that we require to do so has been given to us; the name of Jesus, the spirit of Jesus and his authority.

Pastor emphasised that it is possible to never walk in darkness, to always understand the situation and to always know what to do and that this becomes our reality as we follow Jesus. She reminded us that following Jesus or being friends with him is not abstract, we follow him through his word hence the need to constantly and consistently spend time with the word.

Pastor brought the message to a close by giving us an example of how to use the word. She showed us that as we study the word more and more, the word of God becomes like packets of light proferring solutions to every situation. She gave an instance of someone seeking to pay an house rent with an approaching deadline and mentioned that one word such person can use is found in Phillipians 4:6,

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

In such a situation, all the individual needs to do is give space for the word of God in his mind, and always replace contrary thoughts with the word, if God says do not be anxious, then he has it all planned out. Pastor gave an example of how Jesus was confronted by contrary thoughts in John 11. Even though he had said the sickness was not unto death, Lazarus died and when he got there to raise him up, Mary and Martha came expressing sorrow, disappointment and displeasure at his lateness. All these were contrary thoughts but Jesus stood on what he had said, that the sickness was not unto death and he refused to be anxious or doubtful. At the grave, the prayer he made showed that he truly believed what he said despite glaring oppositions to what he believed, he said “Father, I thank you because you heard me”.

Pastor charged us to place emphasis on the word in this month of lights, following Jesus through his word conscious that in following him, we would walk in the same reality that he did.
