“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Romans 12:21
He continues into the next chapter:
“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1
Isn’t this conclusive enough? He makes the case as to why we should be respectful of those placed as authorities in our habitations and he meant it, the Bible tells us as Paul stood before the Sanhedrin, this happened:
“And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?” Acts 23:2-3
But once he was told he spoke harshly towards the high priest, he repented and made clear he was responding to the word:
“And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest? Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.” Acts 23:4-5
God’s word must influence your response and positions concerning every issue; he knew the high priest was dishonest in his accusations and instructions but he wasn’t submitting to the high priest but to God’s word. Do likewise.
