“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3
If you love God, you must do his word:
“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” Luke 6:46
This is why your study of the word of God is so important, you can’t and shouldn’t try to analyze with your mind what God is like, he says renew your mind:
“…be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romans 12:2
What you assumed about God from your experiences in life or from the environment where you were brought up might be inaccurate and have to be subjected to the light of God- his word!
There are people who are so passionate about their service to God in other religions; they are disciplined and work really hard to be righteous before God, but their service is nothing to God because they ignore his word. In his word, we know he has declared Jesus to be his son and his choice through the resurrection and he is the only way to God:
“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:” Romans 1:4
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
It’s not enough to keep some strict commandments under the assumptions that you are doing it for God, if you love him- get to his word and find out what he actually wants and do it. It’s beyond talking about your love for him- it is keeping his word.
