“Therefore  let  us  not  sleep,  as  do  others;  but  let  us  watch  and be  sober.” 1  Thessalonians  5:6 

The word  of  God  shows  us  that  because  we  are  children  of  the day  and  not  of  the  night,  he  expects  us  to  be  alert;  to  watch and  be  sober.  At  night,  people  rest,  they  sleep,  they  become unconscious  of  their  environment  and  anything  can  happen. 
He  is  giving  us  insight;  he  is  saying  that  those  in  the  night  are unconscious  of  their  spiritual  environment,  they  are  asleep- inactive  in  the  spirit; 
“But  the  natural  man  receiveth  not  the  things  of  the  Spirit  of God:  for  they  are  foolishness  unto  him:  neither  can  he  know them,  because  they  are  spiritually  discerned.”   1  Corinthians  2:14
He  tells  us  to  be  sober-  stay  alert  in  the  spirit;  here  he  is  not talking  about  registering  with  the  vigilante  group  in  your  community  but  being  actively  involved  spiritually,  fully  aware  of your  spiritual  environment  and  one  way  to  do  this  is  to  speak in  other  tongues: 
“For  he  that  speaketh  in  an  unknown  tongue  speaketh  not unto  men,  but  unto  God:  for  no  man  understandeth  him;  howbeit  in  the  spirit  he  speaketh  mysteries.”  1  Corinthians  14:2
The  children  of  the  day  are  alert  in  the  spirit,  they  speak  and live  in  the  spirit.  Child  of  the  day,  learn  to  pray  in  the  spirit-  do not  be  found  unaware.
