Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights- what a feat! (Matthew 4:2)
That’s already more than what some people would have done for most of their lives and so when people came to accost him over here:
“Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?” Matthew 9:14
You would have expected he go on a tirade of bragging rights; asking if they really understood who he was or what he had done, but he didn’t- instead he made clear the time to fast would come:
“And Jesus said unto them… but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.” Matthew 9:15
And it eventually did: Acts 13:2-3, 2 Corinthians 6:5, 11:27
But notice he missed the opportunity to brag about it consistent with what he told us over here:
“But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.” Matthew 6:17-18
Do likewise.
