“No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.”

Knowing God’s word is for your own benefit and advancement in life, and the only progress that is certain is that which is spurred by the word.
Take yourself seriously enough to plan self improvement sessions with the word. The Bible says:
“Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth.” 2 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬ ‭Amplified Bible
And:
“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, Nor from the south.” Psalm‬ ‭75‬:‭6‬ (see also, James 4:10)
This means studying, spending time with God’s word would facilitate your promotion and cause you to walk in wisdom. During the self improvement sessions/ retreats, realize that the word of God is the wisdom of God and wisdom is understanding (Proverbs 8:14). So you will understand what you study, don’t fret!
It is however, so amazing to know that you can set out time to work promotion and progress in your life.
