2Corinthians 3:17

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”  Galatians 5:13

He says instead serve others in love. You are free from the expectations to pay back evil for evil, free to be in an uncomfortable situation but still respond with faith, hope and love.
“Until then, there are three things that remain: faith, hope, and love—yet love surpasses them all. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run.”  1Corinthians 13:13, TPT
There is no law that says you must be sad because people said or did hurtful things to you, you are free to rejoice and see the best in others despite what they might have done.
“She bears up under everything; believes the best in all; there is no limit to her hope, and never will she fall.”  1Corinthians 13:7, ISV
