We are still in the glorious month of Songs and in accordance with theme for the month, Pastor preached to us a sermon she titled, “God wants you to sing”.
We began our journey into the word of God from Luke 11:24 where Jesus gave us an insight into what happens in the realm of the spirit, we saw that when an unclean spirit leaves a man, he goes through dry places seeking rest, that is, looking for someone else to possess and when he does not find any, he goes back to check the house he came out from and finding it swept and clean, he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked that he is and they possess that man making his last state worse than the first, this helped us to understand why some people could have terrible habits or bodily pains and get healed only for the issue to return and become worse, the presence of the spirit in the man changed his condition, that pain or issue in his body was not a result of natural occurences but as a result of spirits entering the man, we can confirm this from how Jesus responded when Peter’s mother-in-law was down with a great fever, he rebuked the fever and it left her and she regained her strength immediately proving that it was a spirit that caused her to be weak and immediately it left, she became fine.
We learnt a few lessons from the account of the possessed man of Gadara in Mark 5:1-20, he had been bound with chains and fetters often but had always broken them, and he was always in the mountains and the tombs shouting and cutting himself with stones, Jesus knew that demons were responsible for the man’s condition and he commanded them to leave, immediately they left, the man became of a right mind, we learnt that demons can influence a person’s actions like they did, he had unusual strength due to these demons that had possessed him, we saw that these demons caused a whole herd of two thousand pigs to drown in a river showing that demons can cause people to be suicidal, we also saw how that Jesus commissioned the man to evangelise his community rather than follow him, because service to God is one sure way to ensure that demons do not return to find him empty.
We went further and learnt why God instructed us to not get unequally yoked with unbelievers, this is because everybody has a spirit and by communing with unbelievers beyond casual relations, there can be a transfer of spirits thereby opening us up to the influence of evil spirits, we saw that in 2 Corinthians 6:14, God calls us light and he calls the unbeliever darkness establishing that we have no business with unbelievers, in verse 16, he calls us the temple of the living God, we are God’s house, he dwells in us and he is greater than all. The verse goes on to tell us that God walks in us, the word translated “walk” means “to perambulate”, and it’s a military term used to mean walking about to secure a border, to ensure that there are no breaches and to fix anything that goes wrong, the Spirit of God walks in us and his purpose for doing so is to deal with anything broken or any issue that may arise in our lives and bodies, Romans 8:11 tells us that the same Spirit that raised Jesus up from the dead dwells in us and one way he expresses himself in us is by giving life to our bodies, Pastor taught us to stand in faith and to cast out demons with our words whenever they show up in any form.
Pastor concluded the message with an examination of Ephesians 5:18-20, we are instructed to be filled with the Spirit and the word of God tells us how; by speaking to ourselves in psalms and spiritual songs and by making melody in our hearts to the Lord, Pastor made us understand that there is a connection between the words we speak, the songs we sing and the things we hear hence the word of God specifically directs us on what to do in order to be filled with his Spirit.
