“And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.”
1 Samuel 30:8
The expected response of a mighty warrior like David having his wife and children captured by the Amalekites should be to go after them and completely wipe them off the face of the earth, after all Saul’s disobedience and refusal to do such had led them to this moment:
“Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.” 1 Samuel 28:18, read 1 Samuel 15
But true to his commitment to God, his word and his leadership, he sought God’s counsel first despite his obvious ways (options):
“I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.” Psalms 119:59
Listen to him— he didn’t tell God, “I want to pursue so follow and help me”, he asked humbly if he should, he didn’t approach God with a prejudice intending to use God as a tool, he approached the Master of his life and God responded. Do you approach God as the Master of your life, is he your first resort?
