“And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.”
1 Samuel 30:8
“Shall I pursue?” God said “Pursue!”
“Shall I overtake them?” God said “thou shalt surely overtake them!” That was where David stopped, run after them and overtake them, that was where his expectations towards God stopped but God said something more, that which was most needed: “…and without fail recover all!”
It is not unexpected in a battle to lose some substance in the bid to recover as many as you can, but putting God first as the leader of his life and actions gave him all he could ever require— God promised he would recover all, what’s more- he got even extra to send to many others as gifts:
“And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away… And there was nothing lacking to them… And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David’s spoil.
“And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends…” 1 Samuel 30:18-20,26
Didn’t Jesus say:
“…for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:32-33
