It’s been an awesome month of overflow and the services have been getting better and better, inspiring us into the reality of God’s plan for our lives.
This Sunday, Pastor began by teaching on the importance of agreeing with the word of God completely, she charged us to not be like those who always have a contrary opinion when the word of God has clearly given us God’s opinion, she explained that this lack of submission to God’s word is the reason why some have experiences in their lives that are contrary to what God’s word has said concerning them, she taught us that if we ever have an opinion, the moment we find it to be different in God’s word, our response should be to submit to God’s opinion knowing that he knows all things and whatever he says is final, we must never be found arguing with God’s word.
Pastor took us into the message of the day, a continuation from the previous week where the word of God showed us that we can and we ought to abound in everything. We read from the beginning of the chapter,
“Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.” 2 Corinthians 8:1-2
The churches at Macedonia were going through a lot of affliction, yet, rather than complain or wallow in sorrow, they had an abundance of joy, they were also in deep poverty yet in the midst of it, they were willing to give according to and beyond their power, even to the extent of begging the apostle Paul to receive their gifts, this was a grace at work in them because the natural response to affliction is sorrow and to poverty is inability and unwillingness to give, yet, they knew that what was needed to bring them out of their affliction was joy and what they needed to bring them out of poverty was giving.
The word of God instructs us to see that we abound in this same grace,
“Therefore, as ye abound in every thing…see that ye abound in this grace also.” 2 Corinthians 8:7
Pastor explained this principle with the story of the widow of Zarephath, God sent the prophet Elijah to her and though all she had left was for her and her son to eat a last meal, the prophet instructed her to feed him first and by obeying that instruction, her situation was changed for good, from this, we see that for anyone who desires a change in their financial situation, the principle is to do God’s own first and the supply will never run dry. We also learnt from the story of the poor widow who gave two mites which was all that she had while Jesus looked over the treasury in the temple, Jesus did not make an attempt to discourage her from giving her all because the principle remains the same; it was only through giving that she could move herself from the position of always needing to the position of always having because only those who have give.
The word of God is clear about God’s principle on giving, he instructs us to give to him first, just like Jesus had said that if we seek the kingdom of God first, every other thing will be added unto us; in the book of Haggai, God rebuked his people because they had built houses for themselves while neglecting his own house and he took responsibility for frustrating their efforts as a result (Haggai 1:1-11), Pastor charged us to not be like those who are millionaires on the earth while been broke in God’s house, God loves and is unwilling to do without a cheerful giver and as we begin to give, we position ourselves to always have because God is able to make all grace abound towards us so that we have sufficiency in all things and an abundance for every good work.
