Thanks be unto God.

It’s the last Sunday service of the year 2020 and everyone at the service was filled with joy, excitement and thanksgiving for all that the Lord has done in and through us.

Pastor started teaching by reading from Matthew 1:23,

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

Matthew in writing about the birth of Jesus recalled the prophecy made by Isaiah in which he foretold the birth of a saviour who would be called Emmanuel meaning “God with us”, not as a name but as a description of what his birth meant; his birth was a testament that God was now with them.

Pastor went on to read from the words of Jesus himself in John 14: 9 -11,

“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.”

Philip had asked him to show them the Father, Jesus replied that he and the Father are one, he in the Father and the Father in him, he persuaded Philip to believe his words concerning the Father being in him by reason of the works that he did, he went on to say that those who believe in him would do greater works than he had done clearly showing that those who believe in him would have the Father dwell in them too.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12

The moment we believed in Jesus, the Father came to dwell in us, now he is not only with us, he is in us, wherever we go, he goes, when we are among unbelievers, he is with them, Jesus was the fulfilment of the prophecy made by Isaiah while he walked this earth but when he left, the prophecy did not end there, he left us on the earth to continue in it, everywhere we show up, we are Emmanuel’s to them because God is in us and he is with them by reason of our presence.

Pastor rounded up the message by showing us something in the genealogy of Jesus as written in Matthew 1, there is recorded to have been fourteen generations from the carrying into Babylon unto Christ, however, on counting, there are only thirteen generations listed, this is because Jesus himself is the thirteenth generation while all those who believe in him are the fourteenth generation, Pastor reminded us that we are Christ, Jesus is the head and we are the body, we are one with him and just as was spoken by the prophet in Isaiah 53:10, through us, his seed, God has prolonged the days of Jesus on the earth.
