“And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.”
Luke 22:40
Jesus’ life is such a wonder and he is so wonderful, some of the things that were temptations to him would have been deemed promotions to others, here’s one of such examples:
“When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.” John 6:15
People wanted to make him king by force and that to him was a temptation worth praying about; imagine some set of people wanted to make you CEO of an oil company by force, that would qualify as a divine promotion- not if you’re a person of prayer!
This is why strengthening your walk with God is so important, this is why this event that happened in Jesus’ life was written, so you’d follow him as a true disciple and realize that good opportunities are not necessarily God’s.
In the main verse, he highlights one of the reasons for prayer to his disciples; he told them praying would lead them off the path of temptation, meaning one reason why some people get tempted is because they are not praying.
His focus interestingly isn’t temptation from buying an expensive car or marrying a wife; his temptation at time was doing his own will instead of God’s- and that’s exactly what he prayed about:
“and kneeled down, and prayed… not my will, but thine, be done.” Luke 22:41-42
Meaning even after, your purpose and God’s plan for your life has been made clear to you, there’s a tendency that you get tempted out of that plan and into your comfort zone! See why separating yourself to pray is important.
