“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”
John 14:21

God expects every investment he makes to produce results:
“So he told the gardener, ‘Look here! For three years I have been coming to look for fruit on this tree but haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it waste the soil?’” Luke 13:7, ISV, see also Hebrews 6:7-8
If you are his building, he expects you to be fruitful and productive as you become all that he has planned for you. He defines the means and end of your fruitfulness and he has told us: John 15:4
He also said:
“…for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5
Of course there are people doing “many things” who don’t even believe in him, but:
“…except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it…” Psalms 127:1
So he’s telling us what matters to God: anything done without him- Jesus, the word of God- counts as nothing to God; it is and will not be recognized, even if it is recognized and esteemed in the eyes of men:
“…for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.” Luke 16:15
Have and keep his word.
