“And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,”
Luke 22:41
The word of God is replete with examples of what people did when they were about to make important decisions and/or begin a new phase in their lives:
“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” Acts 13:2-3
He tells us of Paul and Barnabas; these were Prophets and Teachers in the church at Antioch, but when the Spirit of God called both of them into a more specific Apostolic ministry, they didn’t just jet off- imagine that, most times people pray to hear from God, and after they have heard from God, they stop praying, but they heard from God and prayed even more, adding a fast to it. They knew they were about to enter a new phase in their lives and so they spent time fasting and praying.
“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;” Luke 6:12-13
Jesus was about to choose his closest men, he didn’t just pick them by guessing, he continued all night in prayer. Think about it, this Jesus could perceive the thoughts of men, this Jesus was the word of God himself, you’d wonder why he needed to pray to choose twelve men- and all night for that matter; but he gives us a principle with which we should live our lives- when you want to make important decisions, when you are entering important phases; be spiritually minded; don’t try to intellectually figure out the next step- spend time in prayer.
