Look at these guys:
“And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.”  Luke 20:20
A bit of history will shed light on their intention as a group every time they got an opportunity to be close to Jesus:
“And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.” Luke 11:53-54
“…But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,”  Luke 19:47
They wanted to embarrass him and put him in trouble, imagine living your life knowing that a group of people with some status in society are watching your every move, infiltrating your network with the sole intention of causing trouble, but he was (and is) the light of the world, he never walked in darkness, always had the wisdom of God expressed to counter their opposition. See how it always turned out:
“And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one…”  John 8:9
“And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.”  Matthew 22:46
“The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.”  John 12:19
“And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.”  Luke 19:48
You are the light of the world and Christ is your wisdom!
