Imagine his shock, waking up to an earthquake that only happened at his prison! What a wonder and a mystery! Obviously it had never happened before, else there would be no point putting a prison there. What’s more? When he got to the jail, the barring doors were opened, he had failed in the only thing he was asked to do and so probably hearing what had happened to these guys:
“Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death…” Acts 12:18-19
He decided to be quick about his own sentence and destiny, that is, until he was stopped by a man of the Spirit- who instead of escaping, remained to hear what God would have him do:
“…he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.” Acts 16:27-28
If he saved his body from suicide, surely there must be something about this man claiming this Jesus could save his soul— he immediately believed, but not just him:
“And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, AND TO ALL THAT WERE IN HIS HOUSE.” Acts 16:32
He let Paul preach to his family also and they also gloriously believed and were baptized! What good news!
