“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.”
Romans 8:12
If we aren’t debtors to the flesh, then we are indebted to the spirit, because the Bible says:
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…” Galatians 5:17
And frankly there really isn’t an option, because:
“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” Romans 8:8
“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die…” Romans 8:13
So we ought to and we must live according to the spirit, and the word of God is the mirror with which we observe our spirits, if the word is our mirror then we are indebted to live according to the word.
Jesus bought us with a price and our lives are no longer ours to live, we ought to live for him and he is the word of God, and as such our lives should be an expression of God’s word:
“For if anyone hears the word… is like a man who looks at himself in a mirror and studies himself carefully, and then goes off and immediately forgets what he looks like.” James 1:24, ISV
