Sunday’s message began with a necessary reminder from Pastor that with each passing day, we are getting closer to meeting the lord. Knowing this, we ought to take our fellowship with the Lord very seriously, and refuse to get carried away with the things of the world because the world is not fashioned to remind us of spiritual things. She also reminded us that God sent Jesus to secure our salvation, providing an easy way for us and making it possible for us to walk in righteousness and purity continually. This he accomplished by making eternal life available to us. We were made to understand that when we got born again, there was a complete change and we received the Spirit of God who helps us to know the things freely given to us by God
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God”. 1 Corinthians 2:12
We learnt that some of the things we have freely received of God are wisdom, grace, health and favour. However, the verse also reveals that there is a spirit of the world, a spirit that tends to distract people from the things of God and makes them to forget their identity in Christ. Having this consciousness, we ought to put away wrong things from us such as lying, cheating others and fornication. The life we have received from God should be evident. With this, Pastor admonished us to determine never to be held under the influence of the spirit of the world.
Moving into the main message for the day, Pastor read from Hebrews 5:12-13.
“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. ”
She gave the illustration of a newly born baby who cannot eat solid food because it has no teeth. Similarly, the babe in Christ cannot function appropriately as expected of Sons of God. He needs to grow to do so just as the baby needs to grow to live fully. The verse went on to say he is unskillful in the word of righteousness showing us that it is only as we gain a better understanding of the message of righteousness; that we are better equipped to use the word as a weapon, speaking the right words and effecting changes in our lives. Pastor reminded us that James 3:2 says the man who is perfect in word has the ability to control his whole body and by extension his whole life.
Pastor gave us some more insight into using the word of righteousness giving an example of someone who feels a pain in his body. Instead of responding like a babe by speaking the wrong words, he immediately commands the pain to leave; he has become skillful in using the word of righteousness. That man who is unskillful in using the word can and should grow, learning to speak the right words and taking charge in his finance, health and family. When circumstances seem unfavourable, instead of responding like a babe, crying to the lord for help, the matured man takes charge of the situation with the word of God. Jesus, when he was a baby needed God to instructs Joseph through angels for his protection but when he grew, he learnt to take charge without waiting for God to do something as seen when he calmed a raging storm.
This is God’s plan for us, he wants us to move beyond always needing to call the pastor or seeking for help externally. Having given us the ability to take charge of situations, he has strategically planted us in the places we find ourselves so that when something goes wrong, we can make it right. God needs every one of us to grow, so much so that he has an ambassador in every family. The prophet Elisha’s presence in Israel meant protection for them, as long as he was there, he always knew the hidden secrets of the enemy and revealed them to the King of Israel for their protection (1 King 6:11). We learnt in like manner, God has planted us in that family, room, school and company we belong to be his ambassador.
With this, Pastor charged us to grow and be the ambassadors that God has made us, his very own representatives to bring about the solution needed everywhere we have been placed.
