It has been an awesome ride in this month of Soul Winning and on Sunday, Pastor shared on some important things we should always remember as Christians.

First, she taught us that we don’t serve God with our mind, we might have ideas of what God is like based on what we have heard and believed but those ideas may be wrong. Pastor shared the story of Naaman, the Syrian General to illustrate this lesson, he had gone to Elisha to get healed of leprosy and was instructed to dip seven times in the River Jordan, having had a picture in his mind of how Elisha should have healed him, he left in anger when Elisha did contrariwise until his servants appealed to him to do as the Man of God had instructed.

Pastor also showed us that after Jesus healed a leper by touching him, ten other lepers called out to him desiring to be healed and Jesus responded by giving them an instruction to go see the priest. They may have been inspired by the experience of the leper who Jesus touched but if they had held on to the idea that he must touch them to heal them in the same way, they would have missed their healing when it came via a different method. We also saw that Jesus was not limited by the experiences of Moses, Elijah and Elisha who had to split waters to pass through them, he knew God was not limited to splitting waters and he walked on the water when he was in a similar situation.

With this examples, Pastor taught us that often times, we have an idea of what God would say, what God would think and how God should react, she however reminded us that we can be inspired by other people’s examples but we must not limit God to those examples.

We learnt that the way to serve God is through his word, by understanding what he has said about the situation in his word knowing that the word of God is God and he will never act against his word. Understanding the word of God is so important, this is why we are charged to constantly renew our mind, our understanding of God may not be good enough so he expects us to change those old thoughts and take up new thoughts from his word. As an example, someone with a challenge might think it will take a lot of time and a lot of effort to receive a miracle because of what he has believed such that when a man of God speaks a word of blessing and tells him it is resolved, he thinks that is not enough and that he needs to go through series of fastings and deliverance sessions before there can be a solution. Pastor reminded us that God cannot help anyone beyond their thoughts which is why he gave us his word to enlarge our view and to enable us believe for the “impossible”.

Pastor went on to share the story of Abraham and Lot, how Lot got separated from Abraham and how it resulted into him loosing all of his possessions, his wife and ending up in a cave. Pastor then showed us a reference Jesus made to his story;

“Remember Lot’s wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.” Luke 17:32-33

Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt because despite been instructed by the angel who rescued them to not look back, she couldn’t lose sight of all the possessions they were leaving behind and in seeking to save her life, she lost it.

Pastor showed us the importance of this principle as emphasized by Jesus in another scenario in the same book of Luke chapter 9 and verse 24, the same statement is recorded in Matthew 16:25, Mark 8:35 and John 12:25.

Jesus taught over and over again that whosoever loses his life for his and the gospel’s sake will save it while he that saves his life will lose it showing us that this is not just a suggestion but an insight into how life works. Those who are spiritually minded are those who have lost their lives for the gospel, their lives have become one with God’s gospel, the decisions they make are based on the gospel and in reality, they are not losing anything, rather they have saved their life while the ones who seek to save their life are those who don’t consider God or his gospel in the decisions they make, God is only a part of their lives while they remain the master of their life and just like Lot ended up in a cave after he responded carnally in leaving Abraham and choosing to stay in Sodom, they lose their lives while trying to save it.

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” Mark 8:35

Living your life without regard to the person of Jesus and the gospel is a waste of time and God doesn’t want that for you, he wants you to make the right decisions concerning your life and this begins when you put Jesus and the gospel at the forefront of everything that concerns you.
