Sunday service was a glorious time of edification as every member of church gathered in their various catchment locations to participate in the online service. In spite of the changes in the mode of gathering, the Word of God came to us with power equipping us with all that we needed for the present time.
The focus of the message was on what our disposition should be in situations like this where the world is being affected by a pandemic.
We read from the words of Jesus in Mark 16:15-18,
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”
From the above verses, Pastor showed us that just as a blind man cannot lead another blind man, a sick person cannot help another sick person to recover. In instructing us that we would lay hands on the sick and they would recover, the word of God makes us realize that we are not the sick, instead, there is something about us that makes us unable to get sick and that enables us to heal the sick.
God met with Solomon and told him that wisdom had been granted unto him, there was no immediate physical change to show that something had happened, yet something had changed in him to ensure that this wisdom was reflected in everything he did (1 Chronicles 1:7-12). In the same way, the word of God shows us that we are not the sick, this means that the thing that causes sickness or enables people to be affected by sickness has been disabled and removed from us.
Jesus could have said we would speak to the sick but he clearly said we would lay hands on the sick, by that statement, he ridiculed the possibility for believers to get affected by contagious diseases. He ridiculed the idea that we can contract a particular sickness by touching something or someone, he said we shall lay hands on the sick, regardless of their condition and they will recover.
Pastor reminded us of what the word says in John 3:16,
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”
The moment we believed in Jesus, everything that can cause a person to perish was immediately removed from us, and replaced with eternal life, a life that enables us to lay hands on the sick and get them to recover. This shows us that God has set us aside for victory in times like this and not just that, he has also equipped us with an ability to help those that are sick while remaining conscious that we cannot be sick.
Pastor admonished us to focus on the right things and on the word of God in these times. She instructed us that this is a time to grow, to spend time in prayer and in studying God’s word such that after this period, we are much better, wiser and stronger.
She concluded the message by showing us the response John the Baptist gave when asked for his identity.
“He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias” John 1:23
He boldly declared that the scriptures containing Isaiah’s prophecy had spoken about him. Like John did, God expects us to acknowledge that we are the ones he spoke of when he said believers will lay hands on the sick. He wants us to know that when he talked about those who can never fall sick inspite of a raging pandemic, he was talking about us and he wants to speak and to live our lives accordingly.
