“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18

Jesus made clear that the flesh- conclusions from physical observation has no profit, and so his words are spirit and life:
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63
And he likened the one who heard the word and did the word as the man who built on a rock and remained unfazed by the diversity of challenges that came his way:
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
In the main verse (from the same book), he says he would build his church on the rock, that makes one thing certain- God’s church and all who are members of the church of Jesus Christ are to be unfazed by the diversity of challenges- they remain indefatigable:
“…the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Even if it tries.
