Not As Other Men VI

” Memory Verse

“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.”
Luke 18:11

Today’s Devotional

Look at the Pharisee- he felt he knew enough about other men- they were extortioners, unjust, adulterers and publicans and instead of praying for their salvation, he felt God owed him for keeping his law and choosing not to be like them, yet God had reiterated that the law was for the benefit of all who kept it:

“And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.” Ezekiel 20:11

Knowing this, his response should have been sadness and hope for repentance, just like David:

“Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.” Psalms 119:136

Yet, he felt God owed him something as against others! What an awful way to think!!
If you must think about others in prayer, it should be the fervent desire that their souls be saved from damnation and they walk in the truth of God’s word like Jesus did:

“And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace…” Luke 19:41-42
