Isn’t it amazing that in his prayer, the Pharisee was comparing himself to other people- as though he knew the intricate details of their lives enough to compare and find them wanting!?
He’s talking to God and in his prayer to God, he’s complaining about others instead of examining himself and comparing himself with God’s word.
The Publican on the other hand, didn’t compare himself against anyone but instead saw who he was before God and found himself wanting- he compared himself to God and his standard. What did Jesus say?
“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Luke 18:14
The one who compared himself against others in the presence of a perfect God was found wanting before God and was called proud. Your standard always should be Christ, not people.
