“For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;”
Titus 1:7
Today’s Devotional
A steward of God must not be greedy for gain, the consequences of this far reaching:
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be… slow to wrath:” James 1:19 “He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.” Proverbs 15:27
Here is an example for you:
“The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto THY SEED for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.” 2 Kings 5:27
A leper and a leprous family, free of charge, because of greed. Here is another example:
“Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.” Acts 8:19-20
What did Peter diagnose as his condition? Acts 8:23, Even though he was walking with Philip (Acts 8:13), he was yet bitter and still in iniquity, and so once the opportunity came to be better than Philip (after all, in his minds, the apostles were better and what separated them was the ability to minister the Spirit), he assumed they would accept his bribe.
Whatever opportunity we have been given to lead or disciple God’s people must be dealt with reverently, and we should always seek to put ourselves foremost as inspiring examples and not covetous “rulers”: 1 Peter 5:2-3
Just like Jesus did: John 13:15.
